We first met over 10 years ago in an academic setting. Our professional discussions gradually gave way to collaboration in the workplace. Over time, a friendship developed, centred on solving practical and theoretical problems in ethnography and design.
Although each of us came from different backgrounds and had different experiences and knowledge in various fields, we faced similar challenges. We realised that each of us could help the others to better understand and carry out their work. Today, this dialogue and these joint projects form the basis of an international and intercultural collaboration.
Our aim is to share our knowledge with everyone who faces the same problem as we do: understanding a culture without being part of it.
‘Three Waves’ is an approach that rethinks workshops and coaching. Drawing on insights from neurobiology, cultural studies, linguistics and computer science, as well as the practice of Design Thinking, it creates formats that place play, joy and learning at the centre. As language means more than just words, we work with visual methods, thinking with our hands, improvisational theatre and role-play-games to enable deep thinking and understanding complexity to move things forward.
One key source is cultural relativism: the realization that different groups differ in the logic they use to understand the world. Methodologically, 'Three Waves' draws foundationally on the Participatory Learning and Action toolkit, which was created to facilitate projects that have a lasting impact across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
